Dârjiu
Medieval fortified church and the frescoes of Saint Ladislaus
Located close to Ugron Castle, Dârjiu is one of the region’s most remarkable historical destinations. Its fortified church is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Villages with Fortified Churches in Transylvania”, while the interior preserves 15th-century frescoes depicting the legend of Saint Ladislaus. The surrounding fortifications also offer a glimpse into the history of the Szekler communities.
Saschiz
A fortified church on the road to Sighișoara
Saschiz is well worth a stop for its impressive fortified church and characteristic Saxon village architecture. The defensive tower rising above the church and the surrounding fortifications preserve the atmosphere of medieval Transylvania.
Viscri
An authentic Saxon village where time seems to have stood still
Traditional houses, narrow streets and the fortified church overlooking the village preserve the atmosphere of a bygone Transylvanian world. Its traditional crafts and carefully preserved architecture make Viscri one of the distinctive destinations within the UNESCO World Heritage property.
The village is also closely associated with King Charles III of the United Kingdom. As the former Prince of Wales, he has visited Transylvania regularly and has long supported the preservation of the region’s rural and natural heritage. He also visited Viscri, where he purchased and restored a traditional Saxon farmhouse. Today, the village is widely recognised as an example of the preservation of Transylvania’s cultural and rural heritage.
Biertan
One of Transylvania’s most impressive fortified churches
The fortified church rises above the village and is particularly impressive for its system of three defensive enclosures. Biertan was for centuries an important centre of the Saxon Lutheran community and is today one of the best-known UNESCO World Heritage sites in Transylvania.
Sighișoara
A medieval town that is still alive
Walk through the cobbled streets of one of Transylvania’s best-known historic towns and discover the Clock Tower, the medieval citadel walls and the famous Covered Stairway.

The fortified church of Prejmer is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications in Eastern Europe. Behind its massive defensive walls are hundreds of small chambers that once provided shelter for the village population during times of war.
Călugăreni – Following the Roman Frontier
Transylvania’s history before the Middle Ages
For history enthusiasts, a visit to the Roman fort and archaeological park at Călugăreni offers a glimpse into a much earlier chapter of Transylvania’s past. The site forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia”, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024, and offers an insight into the period when the frontier of the Roman Empire crossed the territory of Transylvania.
